The Best Castles in Slovakia

Slovakia has a number of different castles standing tall with their heads up.

Here are our favorites:

Devin Castle

Located only about 10 kilometers away from the Central Bratislava on a small hilly top, this ruin of the Devin Castle remains a testament of Slovakian history! It has been preserved very well over the years. The walkway is breathtaking, and so is the overlooking view the castle provides of the Danube River. If you want to spend a day relaxing, this place is a must visit. Just remember to pack a jacket or two, because you never know when the cold wind will strike and make you shiver!

Spis Castle

This 12th-century castle, located in Zehra, is still in a reasonable shape. It is majestic, and it offers you a glimpse into the past. This rock castle takes you at least 2 hours to show all that it has to offer. Also, the view of the countryside from above is just spectacular. Entry is cheap, costing only a few Euros. You get to view artists performing live, too.

Bratislava Castle

The Bratislava Castle gives you an outstanding glimpse of Bratislava and its surrounding areas. The minute you lay your eyes on it, you can tell that it is a castle. Located on top of a hill, the structure does not awe you with any majestic appeal but still makes you appreciate it for what it is. Most parts of the castle are very intact and that is the beauty of it. It is easy to find yourself amidst a lot of people when you visit the castle so you may want to plan your trip early morning if you do not like a crowd.

Bojnice Castle

This castle actually looks like one from a Disney movie. It takes pride in being one of the most romantic castles in Slovakia, and perhaps in the whole world! With greeneries all around and a true castle in the middle, the visual appeal of the structure is just incomparable. It is a bit hard to find guides who speak English fluently, or at all, but other than that most things are good about the place. Inside, you can find many ancient structures and details about the castle. Sometimes, performances are done, too. If you love castles, do not miss this one.

Apart from the above ones, Krasna Horka Castle, and Budatin Castle are two other castles you may want to visit.
